    To the south of Sarlat, there are many villages along the Dordogne river , classified as the most beautiful villages in France.

    Beynac

    Beautiful medieval village, and its fortress. Its castle overlooking the river gives it a unique charm, and it is one of the best preserved and most renowned castles in the region. Built in medieval times, it is perched on the clifftop overlooking the Dordogne.

    Castelnaud

    And its castle, overlooking the Dordogne valley, which offers magnificent views of the sites of Beynac, Marqueyssac, and Roque Gageac.

    With its white and ochre houses and its many little lanes leading to the foot of the cliff, where there are magnificent views over the river.

    Prehistoric caves: Lascaux, Cougnac…

    Just 25 km from Sarlat you can explore the famous prehistoric cave of Lascaux, at Montignac in the Vézère valley.You can also follow in the footsteps of prehistoric man with your children at the Lascaux caves.

    The best way to enjoy it: hire a canoe or opt for an excursion in a gabare, a traditional local boat, to admire the prestigious castles of the Périgord from the Dordogne river.
